If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably got dozens of plastic grocery bags stashed somewhere in your house. Since it seems to be such a shame to just throw them away, it’s a good idea to look for new ways to reuse your plastic bags. Not only is it better for the environment; finding new uses for plastic bags is a great way to live frugally. The following are just a few of the best ways to put your old plastic bags to use.

1. Find a convenient place to store them and use them for miscellaneous needs.

My grandmother used to have a drawer in her kitchen stuffed with plastic bags from her trips to the grocery store. Whenever she needed a bag to carry things in, she grab a bag from her ‘bag drawer.’ If she needed to ship a package, she would use plastic bags as stuffing inside of the box. You never know when you might need a plastic bag, so find a great spot in your house to store a few for times that you’ll need them.

2. Use plastic bags to carry library books back to the library.

My kids usually check out their body weight in books and videos every time we go to the library. The librarian usually keeps a box of plastic bags next to her desk to place books in. Use your old plastic bags to hold books your returning to make the process easier—and to avoid dropping books all over the sidewalk when your trying to open the door.

3. Transport food to picnics, potlucks, or bake sales.

Plastic bags are great for carrying food to special events. Place your plastic containers or dishes in as many bags as you need. Be careful not to overfill each bag with too much weight, which might lead to a breakage.

4. Create activity kits for your kids and store them in plastic bags.

Activity kits are a great way to keep the kids entertained without a lot of work. Look for ideas online, such as craft activities, coloring sheets, or educational games. Place each planned activity in a separate bag and store them somewhere convenient. With a great collection of fun activities, you’ll be ready the next time your kids complain that they’re bored.
