christmas

The high costs of gift giving can take a major bite out of your budget. While Christmas is one of the biggest gift-related expenses each year, birthdays and other events can also add up over time. Before you rush out to buy a gift for an event or holiday, consider some of these potential ideas for great affordable gifts.

1. Handmade Photo Frames

You can find plenty of great ideas online and in your local craft stores to help get you started on one of these great projects. Remember that personalized gifts are often cherished more than mass-produced items.

2. Potted Plants and Flowers

Living plants and flowers are one of my personal favorites. Choose an easy-to-care-for flower or plant and pair it with a cute or funky flowerpot. You can even throw in some gardening gloves and decorative stones without blowing your budget.

3. Gourmet Coffees and a Unique Coffee Cup

A sampler of different gourmet coffees and a fun coffee cup are a very thrift gift idea. Look for great deals at your local market to find excellent deals on gourmet coffee blends. For a personalized touch, check out local pottery shops to find one-of-a-kind cups at reasonable prices.

4. Stationary, Envelopes, Pens, and a Book of Stamps

Inspire friends and family to stay in touch with a gift of writing supplies and postage stamps. You can often find great buys on beautiful stationary and office supply outlets, or check out some of the excellent buys found online.

5. Homemade Cookies and Candies

Show off your cooking skills and put together a sample platter of delicious home baked cookies and sweet candies. Even if you’re no Rachel Ray, a simple sugar cookie recipe paired with colorful frosting is a great way to show your love. Simple, colorful paper plates, cling wrap, and ribbon are a great way to display your thrifty culinary creations.
